New Release – Feature Make-Up

The Resolutions by Mia Garcia

a New Release Feature – Make-Up

About the title/Synopsis:

A heart-expanding novel about four Latinx teens who make New Year’s resolutions for one another—and the whirlwind of a year that follows. Fans of Erika L. Sánchez and Emery Lord will fall for this story of friendship, identity, and the struggle of finding yourself when all you want is to start over.

From hiking trips to four-person birthday parties to never-ending group texts, Jess, Lee, Ryan, and Nora have always been inseparable. But now with senior year on the horizon, they’ve been growing apart. And so, as always, Jess makes a plan.

Reinstating their usual tradition of making resolutions together on New Year’s Eve, Jess adds a new twist: instead of making their own resolutions, the four friends assign them to one another—dares like kiss someone you know is wrong for you, find your calling outside your mom’s Puerto Rican restaurant, finally learn Spanish, and say yes to everything.

But as the year unfolds, Jess, Lee, Ryan, and Nora each test the bonds that hold them together. And amid first loves, heartbreaks, and life-changing decisions, beginning again is never as simple as it seems.

Even better this title is available today!! Yep thats right it is this Books’ Birthday!! Congratulations to Mia Garcia!! Cant wait to add another amazing contemporary novel to my list this year! Get reading guys and order this title now!! You wont regret it if you do!!

Falling into Updates

Updates – Monday;

Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

Welcome guys, hope everybody had a good weekend! I myself had a great time. My son had his first dance at middle school, and I finally got a new phone with a great camera!! After spending some quality time together this weekend we are all heading back to our daily, work day, routines.

Which brings us here to you!! There have been updates made Sunday, as well as today. Let’s start with Sundays updates… First off lets talk about the reviews. That is right plural, there are two new reviews in the menu and will be archived Nov..

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand was the Bookish Boss Book Club read for October. It was a creepy, gorey, fantasticly rich tale. One girl has lived there all her life, one moved there a few years back, and last the new girl whos father passed there. However, the island of Sawkill Rock has different plans for the girls. Check it out now!!

I also managed to finish The Oddling Prince recently!! I love love love the Scotland vibes, the folklore, the accents, and the plot itself!! Written wonderfully, single point of view, character narration. Full of magic, wit, danger, and a bond between brothers so strong, no matter the distance they feel one another. A king fallen ill, because of the magical ring on his finger. Until one day, a stranger on a beautiful, disappearing white steed, comes. He saves the king and tells his story. He is the Kings illegitimate child of an Elvin Queen who lured the king to her. In strife and anger she cursed the ring to him, but now this stranger arrives to save him. The prince is convinced enough of his tales, but what of the Kings actions as of late and his hatred for his son, his Elvin son? Check this title out now if you haven’t, I definitely should have done so sooner myself.

Last but not least for Sunday, was the Coming Soon feature title Girls Made of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan!! Set to hitthe shelves November 6, 2018, add to your TBR now!!  Now onward for today, we have already posted names for today’s Shout Outs’!! There 4 new feeds to love and follow!! We are nearing an end soon so check them out now. Also, have a new and Haunting QOTD posted, leave us your answer in the comments!! Now, that is all folks, happy reading!!!

Coming Soon – November 2018

Coming Soon, November 2018 YA New Release

Girls made of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan

Release Date: November 6th, 2018

Each year, eight beautiful girls are chosen as Paper Girls to serve the king. It’s the highest honor they could hope for…and the most cruel.

But this year, there’s a ninth girl. And instead of paper, she’s made of fire.

In this lush fantasy, Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most oppressed class in Ikhara. She lives in a remote village with her father, where the decade-old trauma of watching her mother snatched by royal guards still haunts her. Now, the guards are back, and this time it’s Lei they’re after–the girl whose golden eyes have piqued the king’s interest.

Over weeks of training in the opulent but stifling palace, Lei and eight other girls learn the skills and charm that befit being a king’s consort. But Lei isn’t content to watch her fate consume her. Instead, she does the unthinkable–she falls in love. Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens the very foundation of Ikhara, and Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide just how far she’s willing to go for justice and revenge.

TW: violence and sexual abuse.

Jack-O’-Lantern: An Origins Story

An Origin Story…

As you already know, a jack-o’-lantern is a carved out pumpkin, with funny faces or scenes depicted, usually associated with the holiday Halloween. However, Jack-O’-Lanterns were also carved from Turnips, or gourds? Yep, geographically they werent always a pumpkin!! Also, it is named after the phenomenon of bursts of light flickering over peat bogs, also called will o’ the wisp. To create the lighting in the jack o’ lantern you need a source, such as candles!!

Now lets look at some past facts!! Gourds, gourds were one of the first plants mankind domesticated, some 700 years ago the Maori used Gourds in place of pumpkins, to carve the lanterns. However, the custom of the Jack-O’-Lantern, on Halloween is said to have originated in Ireland. In the 19th century, more grotesque features and faces were carved and used at halloween. This occured in Ireland and parts of the Scottish Highlands. In these regions, Halloween was also the celebration of Samhain. Halloween was also seen as a time when supernatural beings, and souls of the deceased roamed earth, this could also be found in other parts of Europe. Those who had made them said they were to represent the spirits of those dead, or supernatural beings, and were used to ward off evil spirits (In some parts of the country, vampires specifically). They were sat out on windowsills to keep harmful spirits from entering the home as well. It was even suggested that the Jack-O’-Lanterns originally represented Christian souls that had been sent to Purgatory, as Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day- Nov. 1; All Souls Day- Nov. 2.  The story of the Jack-O’-Lantern can be found in many variants from across Western Europe, to North America, in Folklore and More incredible tales!! In fact for some spooky fun look up the Irish Folktale Stingy Jack…he said to have trapped satan, and used Jack-O’-Lanterns!! Come back and tell me thoughts after!! As for this feature story, that is all!! Have fun reading and tell me of any traditions your family has for the Harvest time of year, Halloween etc.!! It is Fall Y’all!!

Hey guys, we are getting back on track a bit since my phone broke last weekend. So lets see what was missed first…

Well one, some days have had Shout Out and QOTD/Topic updates. I havent been able to get to much else done, some book birthdays last week and Sundays Coming Soon – New Release. However thses will be getting revived this week, with a new phone!!! In fact we have posted todays Shout Outs’ already; as well as the QOTD – and we are keeping it creepy ’til halloween 🎃!!!

There are also, not one but, TWO new reviews up already!!! I finished…

Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco first!!  5/5 ⭐, im usually not a big mystery, who dun it fan. However, this novel was anything but the typical!! It was smart, witty, and dark!! With a splash of romance as well to top off the amazing characters, and world building! Kerris’ writing was elegant, and sophisticated, but easy to understand and follow. I loved the first person narrative of course, but would have loved to hear from a point of others also. Simply put, amazing and I recommend it highly!!!

I also recieved my October 2018, Owlcrate this weekend!!! (Unboxing pics later!!) One of the months books, yea there were two books!!, was Pride by Ibi Zoboi!!Review 2 is Pride; I have been waiting for this masterpiece and it finally arrived. I could NOT put it down willingly…stayed up til 3am finishing it!! Ibis’ story and world and characters were so inspiring, and thoughfully written I cried!! Multiple times!!! I wasnt big into contemporary reads, but found myself stepping out this year and into different genres. This book broke the mold for not only retellings, but also for Contemporary masterpieces!!! Wow!! Zuri is cool and calculated, independent and strong, but also has built a wall around her. When new boys move in, the Darcy boys, her whole hood gets transformed to her. Immediately she hates the Darcys’. Darius Darcy most of all. But she will be forced to get on better terms when her sister Janae starts dating his brother!! Her ever growing fears not allowing her to step out. Everything is changing for Zuri, can she handle it? What of her hate for new boy Darius Darcy? You have to this amazing, artistic remix of classic tale…Pride and Prejudice!!! Another rec. from me!!

Today is also day 1 of the buddy read with…@bookishbossclub(IG)!! The October pick is Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand!!! Another hot, anticipated read for October, for 2018!! I can not wait, I have been anticipating this read and hope it will live to its hype!! (I have a feeling it will) Stay tuned as I will update on the progress daily throughout the read together here and on my personal social media pages!!! You can join us anytime on the Book Club pages on IG and Facebook: IG: @bookishbossclub  Facebook: @BookishBossBookClub !!! You also see discussions from everyone there, beware of spoilers though!!!

So we are moving into Day 3, of the Bookish Boss Clubs read together!! Sea witch is so far an amazing retelling of the classic, The Little Mermaid. No spoilers though, but I will say nothing is as Evie thinks it is.

Monday Again?! 😊

August 20th, 2018

Hey guys, welcome to another Monday edition. First of all, I want to go into my head for a bit with you… This week I had to mentally prepare myself to send my baby boy (age 11) to junior high!!! He is growing up quickly, and although he still needs me for things watching him have an interest of his own, a style of his, just coming into his own in general, made me ball like I never thought I could!!!! He is my one and only, I was NOT blessed with the great reproduction system some women are. So, when he is done and on to college, or his own family and dreams…what do I do? Where do I go, how do I live? Gahhhh, he is my everything and so that is why most of last week was a spontaneous leave!! We drove and stopped when we wanted, and had a blast!! Nothing can ever prepare you to say goodbye, or leave to their own. Thank you guys for letting me share that. Onto some bookish stuff ..

As for Bookish stuff, we always have that!! I have finished The Hazelwood, review will be up later!!! However I am struggling with The New Dark, I may have to try again later or DNF!!! This week also brings us to the Book Club read of Sea Witch, which will begin tomorrow!! There are also Shout Outs posted for today!! Make sure to check them out. Tomorrow is our Discussion day!! Join us here for that!!

QOTD/Discussion Topic…

Banned Books Week/Banned Books

Ok, so I know this different from the usual discussion posts, but there is a big reason why. Banned Books is seriously so horrible!!!! Also, to tell you about Banned Books Week 2018!! Yep, it is a thing I promise. Banned Books Week will be held September 23, 2018 through September 29, 2018. Is there a theme you ask?! Why of course, this years theme is ” Banning Books silence stories. Because everyone of us have a story and what if we couldn’t tell that story?! So as a reminder, that everyone needs to speak out against the tide of censorship. The ALAs’, Office for Intellectual Freedom, released their list of the top 10 most challenged books of 2017 during National Library Week. (If you do not what Challenging a Book means please look this up!!) Titles included on the list were:

1.The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas; A critically acclaimed, and timely YA novel. Also, a soon to be movie!!

2. Drama by Rain Telgemeier; best selling Middle Grade novel.

3. and Tango Makes Three by Pete Parnell, Justin Richardson, and Henry Cole. Among many other titles.

These titles and more have been silenced. Banned Books Week, is a call to action to speak up for the Right To Read!!! Students are increasingly defending challenged material. When T.H.U.G hit shelves in Katy, TX., 15 year old Ny’Shira Lundy started a petition; that petition garnered 4,000 signatures and helped to restore the Book!! Lindsey said, ” I feel like children should have the right to want to learn about what they want to learn.” , to the National Coalition Against Censorship.

Charles Brownstein said, ” Banned Books Week gives everyone a chance to celebrate their story and others.”,  Chair of the Banner Books Week Committee.

As the attacks on the right to read escape, a celebration is needed now more than ever. BBWC is here to support the community of readers including, students, teachers, libraries, and book sellers around the world!!

For more information on Banned Books Week, Materials, or simply what you can do please visit; banned books and/or follow their Facebook page!! Remember to fight back this September, against censorship of Reading!!

Benat is a heretic. The crown prince of Argrid, he harbors a secret obsession with Grace Loray’s forbidden magic. New Title Sunday

New Release Sunday – Mirage by Somaiya Daud

July 29, 2018; New Title Sunday

Well, this will be the last new title feature in July. However we wont be talking about a July release, we are going to peek into August 2018!! To help us along, we are taking a peek at the title Mirage by Somaiya Daud, set to release August 28, 2018!! Here is a little about the New Release Title:

Mirage by Somaiya Daud

In a star system dominated by the brutal Vathek empire, eighteen-year-old Amani is a dreamer. She dreams of what life was like before the occupation; she dreams of writing poetry like the old-world poems she adores; she dreams of receiving a sign from Dihya that one day, she, too, will have adventure, and travel beyond her isolated moon.

But when adventure comes for Amani, it is not what she expects: she is kidnapped by the regime and taken in secret to the royal palace, where she discovers that she is nearly identical to the cruel half-Vathek Princess Maram. The princess is so hated by her conquered people that she requires a body double, someone to appear in public as Maram, ready to die in her place.

As Amani is forced into her new role, she can’t help but enjoy the palace’s beauty—and her time with the princess’ fiancé, Idris. But the glitter of the royal court belies a world of violence and fear. If Amani ever wishes to see her family again, she must play the princess to perfection…because one wrong move could lead to her death.

Sounds pretty epic, and I forgot one will be awaiting its release!! I also entered the giveaway that was being held on Good Reads!! I’m excited and by what I know you should be too!! So hurry up and add this title to your TBRs, and Book Haul lists now!!

Nautical New Release

New Release Update!!

For this weeks new title sunday we chose a dark retelling, with a real twist on some classic characters. Sea Witch by Sarah Henning!! I am so pumped for this book and can not wait for it to finally be in my hands!! OK so, Sea Witch is set to release July 31st this year, by HarperCollins Publishing Limited. Now let’s talk about the books premise. Sarah Henning is putting a new twist to the retelling of Hans Christian Andersons charcter – the Sea Witch. In this novel, we see things through her twelve year old eyes. Sort of an origin story for the Sea Witch. With that being said, this is not your typical fairytale!!

Evie has been raced with guilt ever since her best friend, Anna, had drown. When a girl suddenly appears on the shore, with an uncanny resemblance to Anna, Evie befriends her in an effort to make amends. As the two girls catch the eyes – and hearts – of two charming Princes, Evie believes she might finally have a chance at Happily ever after. However, is Evies’ new friend who she says she is?
